Revised Community Center

Note. All of these priorities are subject to change based on the damage caused by Hurricane Michael.

Several Civic Club members suggested modifications to the proposed Community Center.  Changes included the possibility of relocating the center away from the Gulf Front and reducing the scale of certain commercial activities. Here are some new descriptors about the Community Center, as now proposed:

  • Location: to be determined by the County Commission
  • Exterior Description:  One story, locked facility, on piling, well within the height limit. Deep porches. Easy to maintain, non-painted, natural-looking finishes. Turtle lighting.
  • Interior Description:  One large room, to accommodate up to 200 (the current facility—Pine Street Firehouse second story—accommodates 175) with additional space for storage, HVAC and other utilities, restrooms, and catering kitchen. Easy to maintain interior finishes with easy-care flooring.
  • Features: Handicapped access; with audio-visual system, central heat and air, and high-speed internet service. Black out curtains for art shows and family video streaming and for turtle season protection.
  • Management:  Same method as county uses for other facilities, such as Armory.
  • Purpose: Small fee events (similar to process for Firehouse) to cover cleaning: non-profits, community groups, public art shows, civic activities; community recreation. Larger fee events to cover administration and cleaning: private rental, such as for a wedding hall.
