Note. All of these priorities are subject to change based on the damage caused by Hurricane Michael.

Editor’s note: The committee’s research created concern over the operating costs for a splash pad in the Lighthouse Park location. A much better fit for the island is a seasonal, low water flow, cooling mister that provides brief bursts of watery mist.

To retain the island’s laid back vibe, the island should continue to emphasize our family-oriented location. The beach and Gulf have great appeal but families love to come to Lighthouse Park and enjoy the climb and the museum.

Other features in that area need improvement:

  • Basketball court needs resurfacing, along with new nets
  • Playground needs repair and updating:
  • • Surface and equipment to accommodate families with special needs members
  • • Shading to reduce the heat of summer
  • • Additional benches to accommodate parents
  • Walking Fitness Trail around lighthouse park needs completion by connecting paver sidewalks with raised beach boardwalk to make 1.5 mile circuit.
  • A new feature would be an economical “mister,” for use by kids and adults, which use little water and provide brief cooling in summer temperatures, instead of splash pad.

A perfect place for play.

Playgrounds today have dramatically changed.  Contemporary shaded playgrounds not only provide safe and interesting venues for climbing, swinging, or jumping, they are designed to help kids develop skills and improve balance. An “inclusive” playground, like the one proposed for the island, is built to ensure that kids with wheelchairs or other special needs can participate in the fun as well.

Located within the Lighthouse Park, in the vicinity of existing play equipment, the playground envisioned by Civic Club members can be modeled after a similar facility in Apalachicola that was built through grant funds.   An inclusive playground will give our tourists and residents another reason to stay on the island for casual outdoor fun like that which we enjoyed growing up.  Grant funds for the island can make it a reality.

Revised Recreational Activities in Lighthouse Park will be a perfect place for play.
